The Story of Prophet Adam

The first human, honoured with knowledge, tested in the Garden, taught how to repent.

The Quran tells the story of Adam in several places, most fully in Surah Al-Baqarah, Al-A'raf, Ta-Ha and Sad. It is the story of how humanity began: with honour, with a test, with a mistake, and with the words of repentance that Allah Himself taught.

A successor on the earth

Story narration · written from the Quranic account, not Quran

Before Adam was created, Allah told the angels that He would place a successor on the earth. The angels asked whether He would place one who would spread corruption and shed blood, while they glorified and praised Him. Allah answered that He knew what they did not. He then taught Adam the names of all things and presented them to the angels, who could not name them. Adam could, and the angels acknowledged that they knew only what Allah had taught them.

(30) And [mention, O Muhammad], when your Lord said to the angels, "Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority." They said, "Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood, while we declare Your praise and sanctify You?" Allah said, "Indeed, I know that which you do not know." (31) And He taught Adam the names - all of them. Then He showed them to the angels and said, "Inform Me of the names of these, if you are truthful." (32) They said, "Exalted are You; we have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Indeed, it is You who is the Knowing, the Wise." (33) He said, "O Adam, inform them of their names." And when he had informed them of their names, He said, "Did I not tell you that I know the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth? And I know what you reveal and what you have concealed."

The prostration and the refusal

Story narration · written from the Quranic account, not Quran

Allah commanded the angels to prostrate to Adam, and they did, except Iblis. He refused out of arrogance, arguing that he was created from fire while Adam was created from clay, and so was better. For that pride he was cast out and cursed, and he asked for respite until the Day of Resurrection so that he could mislead the descendants of Adam. Allah granted the respite, but declared that over His sincere servants Iblis would have no authority.

You created me from fire and created him from clay." (13) [Allah] said, "Descend from Paradise, for it is not for you to be arrogant therein. So get out; indeed, you are of the debased. (14) [Satan] said, "Reprieve me until the Day they are resurrected." (15) [Allah] said, "Indeed, you are of those reprieved." (84) [Allah] said, "The truth [is My oath], and the truth I say - (85) [That] I will surely fill Hell with you and those of them that follow you all together."

The Garden and the tree

Story narration · written from the Quranic account, not Quran

Adam and his wife were told to live in the Garden and eat freely from it, but not to approach one tree. Satan whispered to them, swearing that he was a sincere adviser and that the tree would give them eternity or make them angels. They ate, and their private parts became apparent to them, and they began to cover themselves with leaves of the Garden. Their Lord called to them: had He not forbidden them that tree and told them that Satan was a clear enemy?

(35) And We said, "O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in Paradise and eat therefrom in [ease and] abundance from wherever you will. But do not approach this tree, lest you be among the wrongdoers." (36) But Satan caused them to slip out of it and removed them from that [condition] in which they had been. The words of repentance

Story narration · written from the Quranic account, not Quran

Adam received words from his Lord, and with them he turned back to Allah, who accepted his repentance; He is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful. The Quran records the words: Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers. This is the first repentance in human history and the model for every one after it.

The two sons

Story narration · written from the Quranic account, not Quran

The Quran also tells of Adam's two sons, who each offered a sacrifice. One was accepted and the other was not, and the rejected one threatened to kill his brother. The brother refused to raise his hand against him, fearing Allah. The killing went ahead, and the killer became one of the losers. Then Allah sent a raven scratching the ground to show him how to bury his brother, and he was filled with regret.

(27) And recite to them the story of Adam's two sons, in truth, when they both offered a sacrifice [to Allah], and it was accepted from one of them but was not accepted from the other. Said [the latter], "I will surely kill you." Said [the former], "Indeed, Allah only accepts from the righteous [who fear Him]. (28) If you should raise your hand against me to kill me - I shall not raise my hand against you to kill you. Indeed, I fear Allah, Lord of the worlds. (29) Indeed I want you to obtain [thereby] my sin and your sin so you will be among the companions of the Fire. And that is the recompense of wrongdoers." (30) And his soul permitted to him the murder of his brother, so he killed him and became among the losers. (31) Then Allah sent a crow searching in the ground to show him how to hide the disgrace of his brother. He said, "O woe to me! Have I failed to be like this crow and hide the body of my brother?" And he became of the regretful.
