The Story of Prophet Dawud

The young man who killed Jalut, the king to whom mountains and birds sang, the judge who was tested.

Dawud appears as a soldier in the army of Talut, then as a king and prophet given the Zabur, wisdom in judgement, and the gift of iron made soft in his hands. The Quran also records a test in his judgement and his turning back to Allah.

Jalut

Story narration · written from the Quranic account, not Quran

When Talut's small army faced Jalut and his forces, those who believed said: how many a small company has overcome a large one by Allah's permission. They prayed for patience and victory, and by Allah's permission they defeated them, and Dawud killed Jalut. Allah gave him kingship and wisdom and taught him what He willed.

Surah Al-Baqarah 2:249–251

(249) And when Saul went forth with the soldiers, he said, "Indeed, Allah will be testing you with a river. So whoever drinks from it is not of me, and whoever does not taste it is indeed of me, excepting one who takes [from it] in the hollow of his hand." But they drank from it, except a [very] few of them. Then when he had crossed it along with those who believed with him, they said, "There is no power for us today against Goliath and his soldiers." But those who were certain that they would meet Allah said, "How many a small company has overcome a large company by permission of Allah. And Allah is with the patient." (250) And when they went forth to [face] Goliath and his soldiers, they said, "Our Lord, pour upon us patience and plant firmly our feet and give us victory over the disbelieving people." (251) So they defeated them by permission of Allah, and David killed Goliath, and Allah gave him the kingship and prophethood and taught him from that which He willed. And if it were not for Allah checking [some] people by means of others, the earth would have been corrupted, but Allah is full of bounty to the worlds.

Mountains and birds

Story narration · written from the Quranic account, not Quran

Allah made the mountains and the birds join Dawud in glorifying Him, and gave him a bounty from Himself. He made iron soft for him, and taught him to make coats of mail so that armour could protect in battle. Allah gave Dawud the Zabur.

Quran · recitation and translation
Surah Al-Anbiya 21:79–80

(79) And We gave understanding of the case to Solomon, and to each [of them] We gave judgement and knowledge. And We subjected the mountains to exalt [Us], along with David and [also] the birds. And We were doing [that]. (80) And We taught him the fashioning of coats of armor to protect you from your [enemy in] battle. So will you then be grateful?

Surah Saba 34:10–11

(10) And We certainly gave David from Us bounty. [We said], "O mountains, repeat [Our] praises with him, and the birds [as well]." And We made pliable for him iron, (11) [Commanding him], "Make full coats of mail and calculate [precisely] the links, and work [all of you] righteousness. Indeed I, of what you do, am Seeing."

The two disputants

Story narration · written from the Quranic account, not Quran

Two men climbed over the wall of his prayer chamber. One said his brother had ninety-nine ewes and he had one, yet the brother demanded it and overpowered him in speech. Dawud judged that the brother had wronged him, and then realised that he himself had been tested. He fell down bowing, asked forgiveness, and turned back to Allah, who forgave him and reminded him to judge between people in truth and not follow desire.

Surah Sad 38:21–26

(21) And has there come to you the news of the adversaries, when they climbed over the wall of [his] prayer chamber - (22) When they entered upon David and he was alarmed by them? They said, "Fear not. [We are] two adversaries, one of whom has wronged the other, so judge between us with truth and do not exceed [it] and guide us to the sound path. (23) Indeed this, my brother, has ninety-nine ewes, and I have one ewe; so he said, 'Entrust her to me,' and he overpowered me in speech." (24) [David] said, "He has certainly wronged you in demanding your ewe [in addition] to his ewes. And indeed, many associates oppress one another, except for those who believe and do righteous deeds - and few are they." And David became certain that We had tried him, and he asked forgiveness of his Lord and fell down bowing [in prostration] and turned in repentance [to Allah]. (25) So We forgave him that; and indeed, for him is nearness to Us and a good place of return. (26) [We said], "O David, indeed We have made you a successor upon the earth, so judge between the people in truth and do not follow [your own] desire, as it will lead you astray from the way of Allah." Indeed, those who go astray from the way of Allah will have a severe punishment for having forgotten the Day of Account.

A servant who turned back

Story narration · written from the Quranic account, not Quran

The Quran describes Dawud as a possessor of strength, one who constantly turned back to Allah, whose kingdom was strengthened and who was given wisdom and decisive speech. Sulayman inherited from him.

Quran · recitation and translation
Surah Sad 38:17–20

(17) Be patient over what they say and remember Our servant, David, the possessor of strength; indeed, he was one who repeatedly turned back [to Allah]. (18) Indeed, We subjected the mountains [to praise] with him, exalting [Allah] in the [late] afternoon and [after] sunrise. (19) And the birds were assembled, all with him repeating [praises]. (20) And We strengthened his kingdom and gave him wisdom and discernment in speech.

(15) And We had certainly given to David and Solomon knowledge, and they said, "Praise [is due] to Allah, who has favored us over many of His believing servants." (16) And Solomon inherited David. He said, "O people, we have been taught the language of birds, and we have been given from all things. Indeed, this is evident bounty."
