Prophet 15 of 25

The Story of Prophet Harun

Given to Musa as a helper and a prophet, eloquent in speech, tested when the calf was made.

Harun was Musa's brother, granted to him as a prophet and a partner in his mission in answer to Musa's own prayer. The Quran shows him beside Musa before Pharaoh and alone among the people when the calf was made.

A helper from my family

Story narration · written from the Quranic account, not Quran

At the burning bush Musa asked for a minister from his family, his brother Harun, to strengthen him and share his task. Elsewhere he said Harun was more eloquent than he, and asked that he be sent as a supporter to confirm him. Allah granted the request, gave Harun prophethood, and sent them both with His signs.

Before Pharaoh, together

Surah Ta-Ha 20:42–48

(42) Go, you and your brother, with My signs and do not slacken in My remembrance. (43) Go, both of you, to Pharaoh. Indeed, he has transgressed. (44) And speak to him with gentle speech that perhaps he may be reminded or fear [Allah]." (45) They said, "Our Lord, indeed we are afraid that he will hasten [punishment] against us or that he will transgress." (46) [Allah] said, "Fear not. Indeed, I am with you both; I hear and I see. (47) So go to him and say, 'Indeed, we are messengers of your Lord, so send with us the Children of Israel and do not torment them. We have come to you with a sign from your Lord. And peace will be upon he who follows the guidance. (48) Indeed, it has been revealed to us that the punishment will be upon whoever denies and turns away.' "

Left in charge

Story narration · written from the Quranic account, not Quran

When Musa went to the appointment with his Lord, he told Harun to take his place among the people, to set things right and not to follow the way of the corrupters. When the people made the calf, Harun warned them that they were being tested and that their Lord was the Most Merciful, and called them to follow him and obey; they refused until Musa returned.

Surah Al-Araf 7:142

And We made an appointment with Moses for thirty nights and perfected them by [the addition of] ten; so the term of his Lord was completed as forty nights. And Moses said to his brother Aaron, "Take my place among my people, do right [by them], and do not follow the way of the corrupters."

(90) And Aaron had already told them before [the return of Moses], "O my people, you are only being tested by it, and indeed, your Lord is the Most Merciful, so follow me and obey my order." (91) They said, "We will never cease being devoted to the calf until Moses returns to us."

Son of my mother

Story narration · written from the Quranic account, not Quran

Musa returned in anger and seized his brother by the head. Harun said: son of my mother, the people overpowered me and nearly killed me; do not let the enemies rejoice over me or count me among the wrongdoers. He explained that he feared dividing the Children of Israel before Musa returned. Musa then prayed for forgiveness for himself and his brother.

Surah Al-Araf 7:150–151

(150) And when Moses returned to his people, angry and grieved, he said, "How wretched is that by which you have replaced me after [my departure]. Were you impatient over the matter of your Lord?" And he threw down the tablets and seized his brother by [the hair of] his head, pulling him toward him. [Aaron] said, "O son of my mother, indeed the people oppressed me and were about to kill me, so let not the enemies rejoice over me and do not place me among the wrongdoing people." (151) [Moses] said, "My Lord, forgive me and my brother and admit us into Your mercy, for You are the most merciful of the merciful."
