A warning to his people

Story narration · written from the Quranic account, not Quran

Lut said to his people that they committed an immorality that no one in the worlds had done before them: they approached men with desire instead of women, cut off the road and committed evil in their gatherings. Their only reply was to demand that Lut bring Allah's punishment if he was truthful, and to say that his household should be driven out because they were people who kept themselves pure.

(81) Indeed, you approach men with desire, instead of women. Rather, you are a transgressing people." (82) But the answer of his people was only that they said, "Evict them from your city! Indeed, they are men who keep themselves pure."

The guests

Story narration · written from the Quranic account, not Quran

When the messengers came to Lut he was distressed, feeling powerless to protect them, and said it was a difficult day. His people came rushing to him, and he said: these are my daughters, if you would act. He wished he had power against them or a strong support to lean on. The messengers then told him not to fear: they were from his Lord, and his people would never reach him.

(77) And when Our messengers, [the angels], came to Lot, he was anguished for them and felt for them great discomfort and said, "This is a trying day." (78) And his people came hastening to him, and before [this] they had been doing evil deeds. He said, "O my people, these are my daughters; they are purer for you. So fear Allah and do not disgrace me concerning my guests. Is there not among you a man of reason?" (79) They said, "You have already known that we have not concerning your daughters any claim, and indeed, you know what we want." (80) He said, "If only I had against you some power or could take refuge in a strong support." (81) The angels said, "O Lot, indeed we are messengers of your Lord; [therefore], they will never reach you. So set out with your family during a portion of the night and let not any among you look back - except your wife; indeed, she will be struck by that which strikes them. Indeed, their appointment is [for] the morning. Is not the morning near?"

The overturned city

Story narration · written from the Quranic account, not Quran

When the command came, Allah turned the city upside down and rained upon it stones of hard clay, layer on layer, marked by their Lord. The Quran says such punishment is never far from the wrongdoers, and that the ruins lie on a path still travelled, a sign for those who reflect.

Surah Hud 11:82–83
