The Story of Prophet Nuh

Nine hundred and fifty years of calling his people, an ark built on dry land, and a flood.

Nuh's story is told across many surahs, and one surah bears his name. The Quran gives it as a lesson in patience under rejection and in trusting Allah's command even when it makes no sense to those watching.

The call

Story narration · written from the Quranic account, not Quran

Allah sent Nuh to his people to warn them before a painful punishment. He called them openly and in private, by night and by day, to worship Allah, fear Him and obey their messenger. He told them to seek their Lord's forgiveness, and that He would send rain, increase them in wealth and children, and give them gardens and rivers. He pointed to the heavens, the moon and the sun as signs of the One who created them.

(1) Indeed, We sent Noah to his people, [saying], "Warn your people before there comes to them a painful punishment." (2) He said, "O my people, indeed I am to you a clear warner, (3) [Saying], 'Worship Allah, fear Him and obey me. (4) Allah will forgive you of your sins and delay you for a specified term. Indeed, the time [set by] Allah, when it comes, will not be delayed, if you only knew.' " (5) He said, "My Lord, indeed I invited my people [to truth] night and day. (6) But my invitation increased them not except in flight. (7) And indeed, every time I invited them that You may forgive them, they put their fingers in their ears, covered themselves with their garments, persisted, and were arrogant with [great] arrogance. (8) Then I invited them publicly. (9) Then I announced to them and [also] confided to them secretly (10) And said, 'Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver. (11) He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in [continuing] showers (12) And give you increase in wealth and children and provide for you gardens and provide for you rivers. (13) What is [the matter] with you that you do not attribute to Allah [due] grandeur (14) While He has created you in stages? (15) Do you not consider how Allah has created seven heavens in layers (16) And made the moon therein a [reflected] light and made the sun a burning lamp? (17) And Allah has caused you to grow from the earth a [progressive] growth. (18) Then He will return you into it and extract you [another] extraction. (19) And Allah has made for you the earth an expanse (20) That you may follow therein roads of passage.' "

Rejection

Story narration · written from the Quranic account, not Quran

The leaders of his people dismissed him as merely a man like themselves, followed by the lowest among them. They said he was not superior to them and called him a liar. Nuh replied that he did not ask them for any payment, that his reward was with Allah alone, and that he would not drive away the believers who followed him. He stayed among his people for nine hundred and fifty years.

(25) And We had certainly sent Noah to his people, [saying], "Indeed, I am to you a clear warner (26) That you not worship except Allah. Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a painful day." (27) So the eminent among those who disbelieved from his people said, "We do not see you but as a man like ourselves, and we do not see you followed except by those who are the lowest of us [and] at first suggestion. And we do not see in you over us any merit; rather, we think you are liars." (28) He said, "O my people have you considered: if I should be upon clear evidence from my Lord while He has given me mercy from Himself but it has been made unapparent to you, should we force it upon you while you are averse to it? (29) And O my people, I ask not of you for it any wealth. My reward is not but from Allah. And I am not one to drive away those who have believed. Indeed, they will meet their Lord, but I see that you are a people behaving ignorantly. (30) And O my people, who would protect me from Allah if I drove them away? Then will you not be reminded? (31) And I do not tell you that I have the depositories [containing the provision] of Allah or that I know the unseen, nor do I tell you that I am an angel, nor do I say of those upon whom your eyes look down that Allah will never grant them any good. Allah is most knowing of what is within their souls. Indeed, I would then be among the wrongdoers." (32) They said, "O Noah, you have disputed us and been frequent in dispute of us. So bring us what you threaten us, if you should be of the truthful." (33) He said, "Allah will only bring it to you if He wills, and you will not cause [Him] failure. (34) And my advice will not benefit you - although I wished to advise you - If Allah should intend to put you in error. He is your Lord, and to Him you will be returned." (35) Or do they say [about Prophet Muhammad], "He invented it"? Say, "If I have invented it, then upon me is [the consequence of] my crime; but I am innocent of what [crimes] you commit."

Building the ark

Story narration · written from the Quranic account, not Quran

It was revealed to Nuh that none of his people would believe except those who already had. He was commanded to build the ark under Allah's eyes and by His revelation. As he built it, the chiefs of his people passed by and mocked him. He answered that if they ridiculed him, he would ridicule them as they did, and they would come to know who would receive a humiliating punishment.

(38) And he constructed the ship, and whenever an assembly of the eminent of his people passed by him, they ridiculed him. He said, "If you ridicule us, then we will ridicule you just as you ridicule. The flood

Story narration · written from the Quranic account, not Quran

When the command came and water gushed from the earth, Nuh was told to load the ark with a pair of every kind, his family except those already condemned, and the believers. Only a few believed with him. The ark sailed through waves like mountains. Nuh called to his son, who stood apart, to board with them, but the son said he would take refuge on a mountain. Nuh told him nothing could protect anyone that day from Allah's command except those He showed mercy to, and the waves came between them.

After the water

Story narration · written from the Quranic account, not Quran

The earth was commanded to swallow its water and the sky to withhold its rain, and the ark came to rest on Mount Judiyy. Nuh called on his Lord about his son, and was told that the son was not of his family, for his deed was not righteous, and that Nuh should not ask about what he had no knowledge of. Nuh sought refuge in Allah from that, and asked for forgiveness. He was told to disembark with peace and blessings.

Surah As-Saffat 37:75–82

(75) And Noah had certainly called Us, and [We are] the best of responders. (76) And We saved him and his family from the great affliction. (77) And We made his descendants those remaining [on the earth] (78) And left for him [favorable mention] among later generations: (79) "Peace upon Noah among the worlds." (80) Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good. (81) Indeed, he was of Our believing servants. (82) Then We drowned the disbelievers.
