How it is written
In most mushafs a small meem (ۢ) is placed above or below the noon or tanween to show iqlab. If you see that small meem, apply the rule.
How to produce it
Bring the lips together lightly, as for a meem, without pressing hard, and hold the nasal sound for about two counts before releasing into the ب. Some teachers instruct a very light closing with a slight gap; follow your teacher's method consistently.
Common mistakes
- Pronouncing a clear noon, so that مِنْ بَعْدِ sounds like min ba'di rather than mim ba'di.
- Skipping the ghunnah.
- Pressing the lips too hard, which produces a heavy meem.
Practice
Read the phrase مِنۢ بَعْدِ wherever you find it, and Surah Al-Baqarah 2:27, then recite to your teacher.
Examples of Iqlab
- Surah Al-Baqarah 2:27
The small mīm above the nūn marks the iqlāb: say a light mīm with ghunnah before the bā.
Who break the covenant of Allah after contracting it and sever that which Allah has ordered to be joined and cause corruption on earth. It is those who are the losers.
