Before you start: read fluently
Tajweed on top of hesitant reading does not work; all your attention goes to decoding the words. If you still stop to work out words, take the Quran Reading course first.
The learning order
- Makharij and sifaat. Where each letter comes from. Most beginners' errors are letter errors, not rule errors. See Makharij.
- Noon sakinah and tanween. Four rules that occur on almost every line: izhar, idgham, iqlab, ikhfa.
- Meem sakinah and ghunnah. Three rules and the nasal sound that most rules depend on.
- Madd. Which vowels are lengthened and by how much. See Madd.
- Qalqalah. Five letters. See Qalqalah.
- Stopping and starting. Waqf signs and what changes at a stop. See Stopping Rules.
- Advanced topics. Rules of ra and lam, merging similar letters, rare cases. See Advanced.
How each rule is learned
- The teacher explains the rule and demonstrates it in two or three verses.
- You recite the same verses; the teacher corrects.
- You find and mark the rule in a surah as homework.
- The rule is revisited in every later lesson until it is automatic.
How to practise between lessons
- Listen to a clear reciter reading a short surah and repeat, phrase by phrase.
- Record yourself. You will hear errors you cannot feel.
- Read the same surah every day for a week rather than a new one each day.
How long it takes
Understanding the rules takes a few months of two lessons a week. Applying them consistently across the whole Quran takes longer and is the real work. Our Quran with Tajweed course sets milestones for both.
