Step 1: Decide what "learn Quran" means for you
People mean different things by it. Be specific, because it changes the route:
- Read the Arabic text correctly (this guide's focus).
- Recite with Tajweed.
- Memorise surahs for prayer, or the whole Quran.
- Understand the meaning in Arabic.
Reading comes first for everyone. Tajweed, memorisation and understanding all build on it.
Step 2: Learn the letters and joining
The Arabic alphabet has 28 letters, and most change shape depending on where they sit in a word. A teacher will typically spend the first few weeks here, using a primer such as Noorani Qaida. Do not skip this stage even if you can recognise a few letters; gaps here cause reading errors for years.
Step 3: Learn the vowel marks
Fatha, kasra and damma, then sukoon, shaddah and tanween. Once you can read any vowelled word, you can technically read any word in the Quran. This is the stage where practice between lessons matters most.
Step 4: Read short surahs
Start with Al-Fatihah and the short surahs at the end of the Quran. Read with the teacher, slowly, and let them correct you. Speed comes later.
Step 5: Build fluency, then Tajweed
Fluent reading is the goal of the Quran Reading course. Once you can read a page without stopping, Tajweed refines how it sounds.
What an online lesson actually looks like
You join a video call. The teacher shares the page on screen or you both use the same book. You read, the teacher corrects, you repeat. Nothing else is needed: a phone or laptop, a stable connection and a quiet corner.
How to choose a teacher
Look for a teacher who is qualified to teach Quran, patient with beginners, and available at your times. Ask whether you can keep the same teacher, and whether you can choose a male or female teacher. Read our guide to choosing a teacher.
How long it takes
It depends on frequency and practice. The Quran for Beginners course page describes typical milestones. The honest answer is that a teacher can only estimate after hearing you read.
Start with a trial
A free trial lesson lets a teacher assess your starting point and recommend a plan. That is a better first step than buying a book and trying alone.
