The Story of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

The final messenger: the first revelation, the years of patience, the migration, and the completion of the religion.

The Quran does not narrate the life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as a continuous story; it speaks to him and about him throughout, often in the middle of events. This page gathers the passages that refer to the main moments of his mission, in order, and notes where a detail comes from the Seerah rather than the Quran.

Story narration · written from the Quranic account, not Quran

The first words revealed were: Read in the name of your Lord who created, created man from a clinging substance; read, and your Lord is the most Generous, who taught by the pen, taught man what he did not know. The Quran describes the revelation as taught by one mighty in power, and describes the Prophet's own state as he was told to arise and warn. That this happened in the cave of Hira is known from the Seerah, not the Quran.

Your Lord has not forsaken you

Story narration · written from the Quranic account, not Quran

When revelation paused and his enemies mocked him, Allah revealed: by the morning brightness and the night when it covers, your Lord has not taken leave of you nor detested you; the last will be better for you than the first; did He not find you an orphan and give refuge, lost and guide, poor and make self-sufficient? And: did We not expand for you your breast and remove your burden? Indeed, with hardship comes ease.

Mockery and the promise

Story narration · written from the Quranic account, not Quran

His people called him a poet, a madman and a sorcerer, and demanded miracles. The Quran answered that he was only a warner, that the Quran itself was the sign, and that Allah would protect His messenger. When a man insulted him as cut off, Allah revealed that He had given him Al-Kawthar and that it was the insulter who was cut off. The Quran describes his character as a great moral character.

The two in the cave

Story narration · written from the Quranic account, not Quran

When the disbelievers drove him out, he was the second of two in the cave, saying to his companion: do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us. Allah sent down His tranquillity upon him and supported him with soldiers you did not see. The Quran does not name the companion; the Seerah identifies him as Abu Bakr.

Badr and Uhud

Story narration · written from the Quranic account, not Quran

Allah gave victory at Badr while the believers were few and weak, and told them to fear Him and be grateful. At Uhud, after a setback caused when some disobeyed the order and left their positions, the Quran consoled the believers, reminded them that Muhammad is only a messenger before whom messengers have passed, and asked whether, if he died or were killed, they would turn back on their heels.

(152) And Allah had certainly fulfilled His promise to you when you were killing the enemy by His permission until [the time] when you lost courage and fell to disputing about the order [given by the Prophet] and disobeyed after He had shown you that which you love. Among you are some who desire this world, and among you are some who desire the Hereafter. Then he turned you back from them [defeated] that He might test you. And He has already forgiven you, and Allah is the possessor of bounty for the believers. (153) [Remember] when you [fled and] climbed [the mountain] without looking aside at anyone while the Messenger was calling you from behind. So Allah repaid you with distress upon distress so you would not grieve for that which had escaped you [of victory and spoils of war] or [for] that which had befallen you [of injury and death]. And Allah is [fully] Acquainted with what you do. (154) Then after distress, He sent down upon you security [in the form of] drowsiness, overcoming a faction of you, while another faction worried about themselves, thinking of Allah other than the truth - the thought of ignorance, saying, "Is there anything for us [to have done] in this matter?" Say, "Indeed, the matter belongs completely to Allah." They conceal within themselves what they will not reveal to you. They say, "If there was anything we could have done in the matter, some of us would not have been killed right here." Say, "Even if you had been inside your houses, those decreed to be killed would have come out to their death beds." [It was] so that Allah might test what is in your breasts and purify what is in your hearts. And Allah is Knowing of that within the breasts. (155) Indeed, those of you who turned back on the day the two armies met, it was Satan who caused them to slip because of some [blame] they had earned. But Allah has already forgiven them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing.

(9) O you who have believed, remember the favor of Allah upon you when armies came to [attack] you and We sent upon them a wind and armies [of angels] you did not see. And ever is Allah, of what you do, Seeing. (10) [Remember] when they came at you from above you and from below you, and when eyes shifted [in fear], and hearts reached the throats and you assumed about Allah [various] assumptions. (11) There the believers were tested and shaken with a severe shaking. (12) And [remember] when the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is disease said, "Allah and His Messenger did not promise us except delusion,"

Surah Al-Ahzab 33:21–22

(21) There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allah often. (22) And when the believers saw the companies, they said, "This is what Allah and His Messenger had promised us, and Allah and His Messenger spoke the truth." And it increased them only in faith and acceptance.

The clear victory

Story narration · written from the Quranic account, not Quran

Surah Al-Fath opens: indeed, We have given you a clear victory, that Allah may forgive you what preceded of your sin and what will follow. Allah was pleased with the believers when they pledged to him under the tree, and He fulfilled the vision that they would enter the Sacred Mosque in safety, heads shaved and hair shortened, without fear.

(1) Indeed, We have given you, [O Muhammad], a clear conquest (2) That Allah may forgive for you what preceded of your sin and what will follow and complete His favor upon you and guide you to a straight path (3) And [that] Allah may aid you with a mighty victory.

(18) Certainly was Allah pleased with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you, [O Muhammad], under the tree, and He knew what was in their hearts, so He sent down tranquillity upon them and rewarded them with an imminent conquest (19) And much war booty which they will take. When the victory comes

Story narration · written from the Quranic account, not Quran

When the victory of Allah has come and the conquest, and you see the people entering the religion of Allah in multitudes, then exalt your Lord with praise and ask His forgiveness; indeed He is ever accepting of repentance. At the farewell pilgrimage was revealed: this day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favour upon you and approved for you Islam as religion.

Surah Al-Maidah 5:3

Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah, and [those animals] killed by strangling or by a violent blow or by a head-long fall or by the goring of horns, and those from which a wild animal has eaten, except what you [are able to] slaughter [before its death], and those which are sacrificed on stone altars, and [prohibited is] that you seek decision through divining arrows. That is grave disobedience. This day those who disbelieve have despaired of [defeating] your religion; so fear them not, but fear Me. This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion. But whoever is forced by severe hunger with no inclination to sin - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

The seal of the prophets

Story narration · written from the Quranic account, not Quran

Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but the Messenger of Allah and the seal of the prophets. He was sent as a mercy to the worlds, a witness, a bringer of good news and a warner, and a caller to Allah by His permission, an illuminating lamp. Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet; the believers are told to send blessings on him and greet him with peace.
